Concerts Around the Corner

Sunday, November 23rd at 3:00pm, the Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition presents Rising Stars from Manhattan School of Music's acclaimed Chamber Sinfonia in their third performance at the Studio Around the Corner.
Audiences will remember the ensemble’s sparkling performances from past seasons – one of which featured the violinist, Hannah Choi, now one of the newest members of the New York Philharmonic. The Coalition is delighted to have Ms. Choi return to the Studio days before she takes on her position at the Philharmonic full time.

Franz Schubert’s Octet for Winds and Strings (1824) will be performed. This six movement, large-scale work is from the same period as the “Death and the Maiden” string quartet and brings the listener on a journey that is mostly joyful, but at times somber and mysterious. The performers are: Hannah Choi, violin; Ji Min Lee, violin; Yangzi Wang, viola; Patrick Hopkins, cello; Ivy Wong, bass; Caitlin Beare, clarinet; Brenton Foster, bassoon; Wing Lam Au, French horn.

The musicians will provide the historical context of the work, speak of their own musical journeys, and share their experience on taking orchestral auditions and pursuing careers in music. This will be followed by an audience Q&A. We encourage music students of all levels to attend to gain insight into winning jobs in professional orchestras or learn of other careers in music.

Manhattan School of Music’s Graduate Program in Orchestral Performance produces polished musicians of the highest artistic caliber. These young musicians work closely with principal musicians from the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. Recently, current and former students have won positions with the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Baltimore, Milwaukee and Detroit Symphonies, the United States Air Force Band, Colorado, Des Moines and New World Symphonies, San Francisco Opera, and the New York City Ballet.

Tickets are $15, although special $5 student tickets are also available. Call (845) 383-8330 or email TOSCAC2010@gmail.com for reservations.
